Can we in all good conscience celebrate Christmas as a festival of peace and love in the face of the continuing decline of such values as solidarity, respect and tolerance? Can authentic and real images and feelings still be found for the much-vaunted “quiet” time of year, or has the Christmas season now been mercilessly sold out to kitsch and consumption?

Seven artists have accepted an invitation to decorate the inner courtyards of the fortress with works related to the Advent season and to present these to the public together with a short text. With a critical view of the increasing commercialisation of Christmas and an examination of the themes of peace-building, appearance and reality, expectation and arrival, wishing and shopping, Hubert Kostner, Stefan Fabi, Verena Oberhollenzer, Johannes Kofler, Simon Rauter, Petra Polli and Mandarina Muttertier feat. Emma@Robin will be transforming the courtyards of Franzensfeste into an artistic journey that ranges from the contemplative through to the unconventional and the cheerful.
