About the Exhibition

FORT biennale_02:

a two-yearly contemporary art exhibition at Franzensfeste Fortress

The second edition of the FORT biennale is a journey composed of four chapters.

Curated and guided by Hannes Egger, Andrea Lerda and Veronica Vascotto, newness and otherness once again enter the military spaces in dialogue with the massive walls of the fortress. It is a pure delight, full of contrasts – and togetherness:

A sense of togetherness is what transcends the concept of the art on display and the artists’ inspirations: togetherness guides the way through this year’s exhibition of contemporary art at Franzensfeste Fortress.

Creating space for people to come together

The narrative of this year’s exhibition series is a response to the urgent challenges of our time: from the intensification of conflicts to the spread of authoritarian systems, from the climate crisis to the crisis in human rights, from the opportunities offered by digitalisation to the erosion of interpersonal relationships.

The premise is that such a development in this world is not only possible, but already exists.

Rethinking ourselves as beings who are part of a single global community, founded upon peaceful relations between humans and on a symbiotic coexistence with all that is non-human, is the only path to survival.

FORT biennale 2026 is conceived as a creative, interactive and open platform, a tool for encountering alternative imaginaries beyond the dominant contemporary paradigms; and a space for collective imagination through which to practise empathy, listening and community.

Reclaiming Collective is an invitation to overcome the obstacles that create separation: a declaration that alliances, participation and mutual support can offer an alternative to the destructive individualism fuelled by turbo-capitalism.

Think, Play, Dance and Act

The works of around twenty Italian and international artists – with a particular focus on the creative scene of the Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino Euregion – are presented within the Think, Play, Dance and Act sections, in dialogue with the voices of researchers from Eurac Research.
