ICOM International Museum Day 2026

Timeframe

17. May

About the event

International Museum Day takes place on May 17th 2026.

To mark the occasion, the Museum at the Franzensfeste / Franzensfeste Fortress
invites visitors to explore the site with free admission.
In relation to this year’s international theme, MUSEUMS UNITING A DIVIDED
WORLD, Franzensfeste will offer a particularly meaningful contribution.

Originally planned and built to defend a territory and to mark borders, Franzensfeste
today engages in dialogue with historical reflection, hospitality, and contemporary
art—often with a strong social and critical perspective.
The accompanying programme for International Museum Day is entirely dedicated to
mutual understanding, opening borders, and community.

Our Program

We warmly welcome you to the following activities on May 17th 2026

Accessible: Bridges: Objects of the Fortress

10 am   |   10 am   |   11 am  |   1 pm   |   1.30 pm

Objects are examined and explored. What connections do they create to Franzensfeste? Together, we build bridges within the walls of the fortress.

For families: No Borders

10 am – 12 am   |  2 pm – 5 pm

Build a wooden barrier.
Can this obstacle be bypassed? Transformed, broken through, or opened?
Which solution do you consider peaceful? Which one effective?
Together we reflect on borders in transition.

Theatre education: Word Lab

11 am – 12:30 am   |   2 pm – 3:30 pm

Participants engage with a text: it is read aloud, personalized, and read again. Within the overlapping voices, a structure emerges that transforms individuals into a
community. In the end, understanding is achieved through acceptance of others.

Guided tours: Open Guided Tours

10:20 am   |   2 pm   |   3:30 pm

  • To the Upper Fortress
  • Treasure hunt
