Times of polarisation. Lecture by Senator Julia Unterberger
Time period

Times of polarisation: How does Italy deal with people affected by discrimination and hate online?
At a time of growing social division and increasing hate speech in the public sphere and especially on the internet, democratic societies are facing the challenge of how they can take decisive action against intolerance, racism and anti-Semitism.
In her presentation, Senator Julia Unterberger, member of the Italian Senate Special Commission on Combating Intolerance, Racism, Anti-Semitism and Incitement to Hatred and Violence, will give an insight into the current legal situation, its gaps and suggestions for improvement.
She will shed light on the role of the Commission in dealing with discrimination and hatred on the internet and highlight political and social initiatives to make discriminatory structures visible and counter them with effective strategies. The focus is on the question: How can a democratic society promote a culture of respect and solidarity?
The event is taking place as part of the current temporary exhibition ‘Disposing of Hitler: From the Cellar to the Museum’, which is on display at the Franzensfeste Fortress until 9 November 2025.
Participation is free of charge. Registration is not required – the event is open to all interested parties.
